Proof coins have been produced by the U. S. Mint since the 1850's. The term Proof does not denote the condition of a coin, but refers to the method of manufacture. Proof coins are minted from specially treated planchets using dies that have been heavily polished. The planchets are hand-fed into the press and usually receive two strikes resulting in the coins having sharper detail and often giving them a Cameo appearance (coins where the devices are frosted and the surfaces are mirrored). Early Cameo proofs are quite scarce and are heavily sought after by collectors. Since 1973, most coins in proof sets have this Cameo appearance.

The packaging of proof sets by the Mint has changed many times over the years. The charts below depict the many different kinds of proof sets produced since 1936 when modern proof set production began.

All of our Proof Sets (after 1955) are in the original, undamaged government packaging with all pertinent enclosures, as issued.
